The Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) in March 2020 as a large-scale relief measure to ensure food security for the poor and vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the scheme, free food grains (wheat/rice) were to be given over and above the usual entitlements through the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Key Features & Benefits
English Version:
- Under PMGKAY, eligible households (those covered under the National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA) as Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) or Priority Household (PHH)) receive free food grains in addition to their regular entitlements.
- The typical additional benefit: 5 kg of rice or wheat per person per month for PHH beneficiaries.
- In its recent extension from 1 January 2024 for five years, the scheme will cover about 81.35 crore beneficiaries and continue providing free food grain.
- The scheme is fully funded by the Central Government, covering procurement, storage, transport and distribution of food grains.

How to Avail & Implementation Mechanism

- Food grains under PMGKAY are distributed via Fair Price Shops (FPS) through the PDS network, in each State/UT.
- States upload beneficiary data and use technology like e-PoS devices, Aadhaar authentication to ensure transparency and minimise leakages.
- The central government monitors progress, allocation, and distribution. As of latest update, digital ration cards are 100% in many States/UTs and automation of FPS is done at ~99.8%.
